'Gravely ill' dog 'dumped' amidst Tilbury fly-tip because owner didn't want to pay its vet bills, says RSPCA

A ’GRAVELY ill’ dog was ’put out with the rubbish’ and left in the middle of a waste dump in Thurrock – because its owner didn’t want to pay its vet bills, the RSPCA said.

The body has launched an investigate to find the culprit who dumped the 18-month-old Saluki, covered in mud, in the middle of a pile of fly-tipped debris.

Two men happened upon the malnourished dog in Low Street Lane, East Tilbury, on the afternoon of Friday, June 1, when their vehicle broke down nearby.

RSPCA inspector Rebecca Benson said: “They had walked up to the area near a huge pile of fly-tipped rubbish so they would be safer off of the lane – and that’s when they spotted a brown and white dog curled up amongst the rubbish and in need of help.

“She wasn’t visible from the road and I hate to think what could have happened to her if they hadn’t broken down in the area and stumbled across her. She must have had a guardian angel looking out for her.”

The dog – now known as Penny – had collapsed, couldn’t stand and could hardly lift her head. She had no collar or microchip.

Inspector Benson said: “The men had offered her water but she didn’t want any. She was emaciated and very dehydrated, so I rushed her to a vet who feared she may have some gastro problems, so she will remain at the surgery for further monitoring, treatment and lots of TLC.”

The dog was kept on a drip all weekend and is now able to walk around.

Inspector Benson continued: “I strongly suspect she’s simply been case aside because she needed some veterinary attention and her owner didn’t want to pay for that.

“She’s literally been thrown out with the rubbish and was dumped at a location where she could have easily never been found.

“To do something so cold and callous is just heartbreaking and I’d like to find out who is responsible.”

Anybody with information on who dumped Penny was urged to call the RSPCA on 0300 123 8018.
